A prominent column in Marienplatz topped with the Virgin Mary.
The Mariensäule is a Marian column located in the heart of Munich's Marienplatz. Erected in 1638 by Elector Maximilian I to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation, it features a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon. The column is surrounded by four putti, representing the city's victory over war, pestilence, hunger, and heresy. It serves as a historical centerpiece for the square and a popular meeting point for both locals and tourists.
