Mariensäule
Munich • Monuments & Statues
The Mariensäule stands prominently in Marienplatz, topped with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary on a crescent moon. Erected in 1638, this column commemorates the end of the Swedish occupation, making it a significant symbol of peace for the city. Surrounding the column, four putti represent Munich's triumph over war, pestilence, hunger, and heresy. This historical landmark not only serves as a focal point for the square but also attracts both locals and visitors, especially during the summer months when city tours are in full swing.
