An ancient underground water reservoir known for its unique architecture.
The Basilica Cistern, built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, is one of the largest ancient cisterns beneath Istanbul. Its stunning structure features over 300 marble columns, many of which were repurposed from earlier Roman buildings. The atmospheric lighting and the sound of dripping water make for a hauntingly beautiful experience. It is famously known for the two Medusa heads used as column bases, believed to protect the cistern.
