Istanbul • Monuments & Statues
The Çemberlitaş Column, also known as the Column of Constantine, is a significant historical landmark situated in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Dating back to 330 AD, it was erected by Emperor Constantine the Great to signify the center of his newly established capital, Constantinople. Made of porphyry stone, the column originally supported a statue of Constantine, later replaced by a cross. Although it has suffered damage from earthquakes and fires over the centuries, it stands as one of the oldest surviving Roman monuments in the city, making it a notable stop for those interested in the rich tapestry of Istanbul's past.
