The ancient defensive walls surrounding Heraklion.
The Venetian Walls of Heraklion are among the most well-preserved fortifications in the Mediterranean, constructed by the Venetians during the 16th century. These massive walls stretch for approximately 4.5 kilometers, enveloping the old city with bastions and gates, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The Martinengo Bastion is particularly significant, housing the tomb of the famous writer Nikos Kazantzakis. Walking along these ancient walls provides a glimpse into the city's strategic importance in history and its architectural evolution.
